How much money would I need to start a self-sufficient farm?

I am interested in eventually purchasing land, building a house and shed, and live by growing my own food and bartering whenever possible. I would raise chickens but no more. Is this a feasible idea (in New England)? ty

Answers:
Check for government help. They will help farmers get started and keep going if they keep there farmland. Not much money is to be made on a farm that is why the government assists farmers.

the way you are talking it will be impossible,, the electric company will not barter!! you can't sell enough eggs to pay other bills! you would have to do with out most of todays conveniences, even your computer!! and the work load would be way too much for one person,, how would you pay helpers?? you would need a LOT of kids or other people doing the same to help each out,,
you would need to supply your own veggies,, pork, beef , chickens,, grains,, salt, etc, etc,,
and you just want to raise chickens?? where you going to get the tractor and all the attachments,, a car,, pay for medical bills, kids schooling???
to be self sufficient you would have to even supply your own clothes!!
i thought of doing something like this after i retired from the military,, i have the money, land etc,, my body is to old and shot up now to even consider it..
it's depend upon your ability & ur patience. think step by step & think +ve.
