Should I Wax a Newly Varnished Worktable?

I have just completed putting 3 coats of oil based varnish on maple butcher block tables that will be used in a shipping department of my work. The finish looks great but it seems to lose its shine after a short time. I was thinking of applying a wax to the surface to hold the shine and to give it a smoother texture. What wax should I use? Liquid? Paste?...Im so lost. Should I even be using a wax at all?

Answers:
Polyurethane would be the most durable finish.

Wax would be OK to use provided the area they will be used is not a wet environment. Wax will protect well against damp conditions, but water on it will seep through to the finish below and you'll end up with water marks. Liquid, paste, either one will work fine, just a matter of deciding which you'd rather work with.

I would use shellac for the final finish to help protect the varnish(again, same rules apply as with wax, and you can wax the shellac which will add even more protection.). It's very easy to apply, dries quickly, each thin coat "melts" into the previous coats forming a thick solid shell over the varnish. It can be buffed to a super high shine or left matte or anywhere in-between, and is very easy to repair. I think it aso looks a whole lot better than any other protective finish. Here's a website with more detailed info about shellac.
