What characteristics of animal chews on plastic?

I keep my dog food within a plastic tub with a hermetically sealed lid in the garage. Something have been chewing along the plastic edges of the lid. Is this chipmunks or rats? Ideas to get hold of them out are also appreciated.

Answers:    It's probably rats or mice. I had rats contained by an apartment once who chewed through the foil-backed fiberglass insulation in a stove and they started living underneath the cook top. They even used the fiberglass for nesting material.

Mice and rats are incredibly adept at squeezing into tight places. So, even if you enjoy a small gap beneath the garage door or somewhere else in the garage, they're going to procure in. Especially since they know there's a source of food within there. So, the solitary way to exterminate them is to trap them.

Mouse/rat traps (the standard springy kind) are very impressive. Bait them with peanut butter and set them out in close proximity the food bin at night. Repeat every darkness until you go a couple days short catching anything. And, make sure your dog(s) don't mess beside the traps. It can be quite rough if they stick their nose within the wrong place.
Mice sounds about right, they love dog food, when I be breeding them, that is what I feed them. They will chew up plastic.
