We're closing on a house and our Lawyer is a dud...do we need him?
Answers:
Unless you're an expert already, you need a lawyer to look at this paperwork. Think of it as insurance. $500 buys experienced and professional eyes to look everything over. If something in the paperwork is wrong, it could cost you much more later to have it fixed.
And the price is not terrible - the last time I sold a house and bought a new one, it cost me more than that for the lawyer to review the selling papers, and then again for the purchase paperwork.
Your best bet might be to make an appointment to go to his office and ask where he is at on reviewing the deal. But be brief and to the point - lawyers bill almost by the minute. I had a 5 minute phone call cost me an additional $20.
Next time, try calling the local bar association and ask for a recommendation, or talk to your friends and see who they've used before.

Try to get your money back and get a new lawyer. He obviously doesn't value your business however not having a Lawyer going over your contract is very dangerous.
You have a right to good service. Find another lawyer.
unfortunatley, the lawyer is a must... i feel your pain. i'm going through the same exact thing now
I've never had a lawyer to close a real estate deal. The real estate agent and the escrow company have taken care of all the legal requirements.
Lawyers have problems returning calls...
no get a better bank. yours sucks. a good bank will take care of you, you don't need a lawyer.
no I work for a mortgage company first you have tomake sure what they are selling you rates are really high now so be careful also if your on long island i know a great atorney in rocky point eamil me if your interested.
A lawyer is a lawyer is a lawyer...he probably thinks he's doing you a great service for just being there, personality or no. I would say it is a value though. I had someone there when I closed, and they caught a $4000 error, I would have never known...
It can be very hectic. I went through the same thing since I was very anxious of buying my first house and my attorney wasn't even returning my calls. It was very frustrating! He may not have much news from the other party. Ask your realtor for information.
He doesn't get paid until the day of the closing so be patient and everything will be fine. Enjoy your new home.
Ya, you don't need him. He's got the realtor's best interest in mind, not yours. You should hire a settlement company. They make the whole process as smooth as can be.
NO YOU DONT
i sold my house after 32 years and had a great realtor. if you trust your realtor you do not need the lawyer. i didnt have one and things went so smooth for. my brothers didnt think i could do it .
Im not sure what the laws are in your state but where I live & when I bought a house I did not need a lawyer. Your loan company & the realtor will take care of everything. If anything do it without the lawyer and before you sign the contract take that to an attorney before you sign. Im sure it will be alot cheaper too!
Good luck to you
Yes by all means you need one. You may need to get a new one though. The lawyer doesn't actually do anything like this though, it is his/her assistant. Sorry things are going bad. Thats why I never recommend a lawyer. I may give a few names if asked but always say, they have done well in the past but past performance is no assurance of future performance. Good luck
absolutely not! my friend is in the process of closing on the house and they paid $800 for thier lawyer who's a complete moron and just lazy! i dont trust most of these lawyers.bunch of scumbags
