how do i get rid of a bat in my home?

There is a bat in my basement. I live in indianapolis. I would like to know if there is some organization in or near town that will capture the bat for free for conservation efforts.

Please help this problem is driving me batty. :)

Answers:
Wait until he leaves at night to feed. Then fix or close the opening he is using to enter your basement.

I would suggest bombing the house with like a bomb as in "flea" bombs and see if that kills it. If not call your local vet clinic and ask them. good luck!

Leave a light on outside the house near a window or a door which will attract some bugs at night. Bats eat bugs. maybe he will fly out of the basement and not come back. He has to be eating something...you could feed him to get him out or deprive him of food until he leaves the house or dies. Also, I have heard that bats do not like shrill music like the 80s power ballads, basically anything that has an electric guitar so perhaps you could test that as well and see if that drives him from his hiding place. I'd recommend some Joan Jett or Lita Ford songs.
Call your local SPCA (society for the prevention of cruelty to animals) chapter. They should be able to help. Most universities in your area will also have a Chiroptologist (scientist who studies bats) or a mammologist (scientist who studies mammals) and would probably be willing to either come and get the bat or give you advice about how to capture and handle it so you can release it safely. Bats do sometimes carry rabies so a bat bite can be quite serious. Their teeth are razor sharp, but quite small so they are not a serious bite threat except for the rabies.
Open a window so he can fly out. Fix the hole he came into the house with.

A sheet thrown over him will trap him until you can take him outside.

Build him a nice little bat house for the back yard and maybe he'll stick around and eat bugs.
The bat should be hibernating now. It's not going to willingly leave your basement. Put on heavy gloves, grab an old coffee can or something similar in size and a piece of cardboard. Put the can over the bat, slide the cardboard underneath and take it outside and let it go. Don't forget to leave the doors open when you start because you are not going to have any free hands. Don't use flea bombs, etc. The bat is not going to willingly harm you. If you don't want to do that, call animal control.
