What is a good home fire extinguisher?
Answers:
The best fire extinguisher for the home is called an ABC dry chemical fire extinguisher. If you are on a tight budget you can get them at any hardware store (ie. Lowe's/Home Depot) or stores like Target and Walmart. These fire extinguishers are usually made for one time use. They are made of plastic parts and aren't reliable for many years but it should get you by.
If you look in the yellow pages under fire extinguisher you will find there are companies that sell extinguishers for the commercial and industrial fields. If you call them they can sell you a better quality fire extinguisher made with all metal parts.
Ask them if they have any used or reconditioned fire extinguishers. Often you can purchase them for less than the Walmart fire extinguishers and the quality in a used "Ansul" or "Amerex" is far beyond that of the cheaply made brands.
Reguarding size, I would reccomend the 5# or 10#. Any smaller and you not going to put out any realistic size fire. Any larger and the extinguisher may be difficult to operate.

Any brand will do, make sure it is an ABC dry chemical extinguisher, however. The larger the better.

A good fire extinguisher will be one that can contain and put out all types of fire. Class A fires are wood, paper, and other dry materials that burn well, can be put out with water. Class B is oils and combustible fluids, and can be put out with "Purple K" and Halon extinguishers. Class C is electrical fires, and can also be put out with Halon and Purple K, but will need to be checked and repaired quickly by a proffesional. Normaly multipurpose fire extinguishers can be obtained at your local fire department. Take the kids down there, its a fun trip. Just ask them about it and they can make good recommendations.
