How far do you have to dig before you strike water?

I was just wondering about this as I see in old westerns these wells and wanted to know how far you have to dig to get to water and make a well.

depened on how high the water table is.... country homes have wells, they get their water from the water table. you may have to dig 50ft... maybe 150ft.... just depends on the area

It all depends. It could range anywhere from 10 feet to 10 miles. I think wells are about 20 to 150 feet deep in most cases.
