Is a Garbage Man allowed to take Garbage (lawn chairs, etc.) Home instead of to the land fill?

It depends on the rules of the company, the town, and the state. In some jurisdictions and companies, there are rules that prohibit the garbage men from taking things home, and in others there are no rules.
But in general, even where there are rules against it, scavenging is one of the understood benefits of the job. These people are engaging in incredibly dangerous work that many people wouldn't want to touch with a 10-foot pole. So why begrudge them taking home an item or two from a pile of stuff that the former owner has discarded?

I wouldn't see why not. I mean it is garbage is it not? They've done that to some of my items as well and it doesn't bother me. What does bother me is when individuals drive up in their beat up trucks and dig thru the trash looking for something they want. That's just tacky.

Basically, it is probably supposed to go to the landfill.. or crusher, etc.
But beyond that... if you've discarded it, why would you begrudge someone else making use of it if they can?

I don't know if there's a law against it or not, but I don't see what the big deal would be. One man's trash is another's treasure. Personally, it wouldn't bother me if someone came along and took something from my trash because they wanted it. I'd rather see something go to good use than being thrown into a landfill.

No, it's actually a good thing--recycling. Anything that doesn't wind up in the landfill is a good thing. Why does it bother you so much? Once you are done with it, why should you care? And if it's not even yours, then it really shouldn't bother you! Stealing from the job? You mean the company that has to pay by the pound to dump stuff at the landfill? The less they dump, the less it costs them. It's win win!

When I lived in Iowa, there was a townwide spring cleaning where people would put furniture, etc. outside for anyone to pick up if they wanted it before the garbage guys came to get it the next day, everything was perfectly clean and usable, it was just that nobody wanted it anymore.
We have "trash diggers" all the time. I don't care if they take stuff. I would rather they take it a use it than it sitting in a landfill for years. I've never seen a trash collector keep something but I wouldn't care about that either.
Trash is Trash. Land fills are actuall y public so you can go ahead and and visit one if you really want to. If a garbage man takes your trash home, who really cares? Is it that important? I'm just glad they are taking my stuff somewhere else, I don't care where it goes, that's the reason I threw it out in the first place. Stealing? Land Fills are buried, not for profit but for thesake of our home not having tons of trash in the back yard and eventually be buried in it.
It never fails to amaze me, some of the questions that people ask. I am not being nasty but your question is something I would never think of in a million years and I am just as sure you (or anyone) would feel the same toward my questions/answers.
Anyway, our garbage men go through our garbage bags!! I don't return cans or bottles. They take them all out and throw them in large bag that they have hanging off the truck. If I throw out an old lamp or something, they put it in the truck. I don't care. I am glad someone can benefit by something I have tossed aside. We can put anything on our curb and within ten minutes it is gone! Once in awhile they are even nice enough to come to the door and ask if they can have it or if it is for sale.
They can take anything I don't want.
It probably depends on who they work for and there work place rules. I am happy to get rid of junk or trash and if someone else can use it I will gladly give it to them.

As many of the others have said it is perfectly OK for them to save items from being crushed and put into a landfill. Many communities have laws or ordinances against people roaming the area and digging through the refuse sitting curbside for good reason. People pull things out from under a pile and just leave the mess and go on to the next house. There may be some items sitting curbside waiting to be loaded into a car or truck that are not refuse and the trash divers will cart them off just as fast and you are wondering who stole them and you know how kids leave their bikes,scooters etc. etc.... just lying around for someone to take and could be easily "mistaken" for trash. How about the aluminum can collectors rooting through trash bags and leaving the mess behind.
