Is it better to sharpen a knife under running water? How is the best way?

That's how my dad used to do it, and he's OLD SCHOOL.
My guess is that the running water removes the bits o' knife that you are taking off with the sharpening stone so that they don't get rubbed around and consequently dull the knife. It seems to make sense if you think about it, but maybe that was more info than you needed.

depending on the type of sharpener you have... running water will wash away the tiny particles of the knjife that have been removed giving you a cleaner blade to work with... so it should help a bit... but i doubt you will see a difference
GET A WET STONE AND SPIT ON IT
depends on what u use dif items use diffrent things. If ur not into sharpenign knifes and are jsut doign to so u have something to cut with and dotn really care much bout it get one of thos v grooved hand held sharpeners that use tongstun shaped in a v. i got one it works really good to get a dullblade to a sharp but since i like REALLY sharp knives after that i use a stone lol. if it cant shave my face its nto sharp enoguh lol
the best way to do this is to have a good sharpening stone,put honing oil on the stone,and keep the edge of the blade at a contestant angle .
if you really want to put a nice edge on a blade, while it may be expensive, a professional laser sharpening job would be the best bet, but that may be a little overkill for what you are looking for. figured I'd throw it out there.
