Honestly it really depends on where you live. The price is different from place to place in the U.S. Also you CAN have old tanks filled here in the U.S. Exchange isn't mandatory but you have to find a distributor in your area. I can't be exact but I'll give you the best answer I can.
To fill the tank on my Dad's BBQ It's 45 bucks but he's got a pretty big tank for a BBQ. Using an average tank it costs about 25$. Using the BBQ every night the average tank will last you about a week if you have it on about an hour or an hour 1/2 at a time. Double that for a tank twice the size of the ones you see at the exchange places (like in front of the grocery store, where you take an old tank and trade it for a new and full one.) We're in Oklahoma so the price may vary for you where ever you are...

Well in the US (at least in Nevada) they don't fill tanks anymore, you bring in your empty and they switch it with a prefilled tank. We pay $19.99 for the replacement of a regular sized BBQ propane tank.
Call your local propane distributor from the yellow pages.
They can tell you your local cost. They are also good at estimating usage costs.
Where I live, propane costs $3 per gallon (usa). Multiply that by the number of gallons for the cost to fill a tank.
Not all small tanks are refillable. In my area, some gas stations sell propane and will fill tanks, and one hardware store does too.
