Yesterday I saw an insect the I couldn't I.D. .?

The insect looked like a cross between a wingless wasp and a big fire ant. It had red and black stripes and is tough as nails to kill. The length is about an inch and it had mandibles that were about a sixteenth of an inch long. It walked on legs that were fully extended.
