How long should a brand new fridge freezer be switched on for before you can safely put food in it?

right away. if food is frozen will help in cooling it down.

i would say put food in straight away then and turn it on . it won't take long to get cold

i just got one and they said dont put it on for 6 hours to let it settle, and then plug it in and fill it up after 24 hrs
they say a day for all the gas to settle ,but i got told 4 hours till it gets cold
It depends on what make you buy, as I had quite a few conflicting stories told to me a few weeks ago. In the end I bought a Bosch fridge / freezer. When I checked the instruction book, I found that I only had to wait 30 mins before switching the power on, then I could put all my goodies straight in!

id say about 48 hours tops thats depending on what fridge freezer it is.
new fridges now can be turned on right away don't need to leave them to stand.
As they have changed the gases in them.
I don't know if half the folks who have answered know how to read. Get yourself a fridge thermometer and as soon as it's down to about 8degrees centigrade it will be alright, should only take a couple of hours.
