Why do people not know that a tomato is both a vegetable and a fruit?

Basically, while the rest of the world might consider a tomato a fruit, here in the U.S., if you say a tomato is a vegetable, you are correct. The U.S. Supreme Court made this ruling, that tomatoes are indeed vegetables, in 1893 to counter the fruit tariff being levied on imported tomatoes, while other "fruits" avoided the tariff because they were considered vegetables.
But, to answer the question, why don't people know this, I imagine because the average person could care less whether a tomato is technically considered a fruit or a vegetable. I know I don't really care, it won't affect my consumption one way or the other.
