We are planning to build a house in west Texas. Do evaporative coolers really work for air conditioning?

I'd likt to know how the air feels, since I know it works by water evaporation and humidity. Does it feel clammy?

Answers:
As long as the climate is dry - no humidity or little humidity, an evaporative or as we used to call them, swamp cooler works pretty well. I din't notice any claminess, the climate in Fresno where I used to live, was quite dry - so the little bit of moisture in the air from the cooler was quite refreshing. Swamp cooler can get moldy and you have to change the pads periodically but it is very cost effective!!

Other answers:
they sorta work, they are known as swamp coolers, in texas you really wanna get a decent AC, its hot as hades here.

abosolutely, probably better that refrigerated air. they will freeze you out.
they are not good in areas with high humidity though, but west texas is more desert climate so you'll be fine.
