Why are there so many pine cones on the trees this year?

My grandmother always said there was a Native American folk lore about why there are so many pine cones. I live in upstate NY and the trees are covered with pine cones, so much so that they look like they are brown instead of green until you get up close. Has anyone heard this folk lore?? thanks.
