How do I start a recycling program at my work?

Answers:
That depends on where your company is located. If you are in an office building that rents space out to a lot of different companies you would have to go through the building management company. There are companies that provide recycling containers that sit next to the trash dumpsters. If your company is located in a one-tenant free-standing building you could contact them yourself and get all the info before you take it to your HR department or your boss. These containers are usually placed free at non profit organizations such as schools and churches, but places of business have to pay a monthly dumping fee for this. Once all that is in place you would have to provide special containers, which you can get from the recycling company, OR at an office supply store. THEN you have to make sure the nightly cleaning crew actually keeps the trash seperated and dumps it all in into the correct containers.

Set out boxes and label them 'PAPER' only and set out a trash can in the breakroom area labeled CANS and one for PLASTIC....

Then send an email or post a notice that you are wanting to recycle and for people to please use the boxes or trash cans you have provided.

Contact your HR department and explain you want this.
Then you will need to contact various recycle companies and see if they can assist. Many will pick up once a month for free, but they will ask you to have a specific location outside.

Paper is the easiest to recycle, then cans.
If you have a suggestion box, try putting the suggestion in there. Or directly suggest the idea to your supervisor. The best thing to do is to do a little researching online. Go to Yahoo's search engine and look up recycling services in your area. I know there is a company that provides waste bins specifically for papaer and aluminum cans and they also come and pick up the bins once they are full. (There would be a fee of course). Another idea is to just create a bin for aluminum cans (soda cans, etc) and once it is full, designate someone to bring the cans to a scrap metal yard to see the cans for scrap. A LOT of fire stations in my area do this and use the money to give to burn victims. I think it's a great idea and you could use the money for a work-related cause or give it to a charity. Good luck and have fun with it.
