I think what you're referring to is the waste disposal unit - saves throwing your food waste into the kitchen bin. If it's about 12 to 18 inches long and about 6 inches wide then I guess this is what it is. If it's bigger (maybe about the size of a small washing up bowl) then it's probably the second sink which is usually used for rinsing the pots in cold water after they've been washed in hot soapy water. Some sinks have all 3 (main sink, rinsing sink and waste disposal).
Other answers:
usually connected to a waste shredder, wash your plates off or tip your food waste down it and it grinds it so as not to block your waste pipes

For Veggies
One is for grown ups and the other for children.
it is used for washing vegetables and all that jazz you can leave them soaking in it, i think, so you wont need as much water, and also so you can use the main part as well for various other items.
It is either a sink for rinsing dishes,or agarbage disposal.
Its either for washing smaller items, so you use less water, or a place to store the clean dishes so they can be rinsed. The big side should hold the water, then once they are clean, they go in the other side and rinsed when you have a stack. Its to reduce the amount of water used, as well as convenience for people.
It is generally used for washing fruits and vegetables- so you can have dirty dishes in the big bowl an then you can put fruits and veggies in the small bowl without getting them contaminated. Even though you clean your sink out, some people dont like to lay food in a sink that they would put dirty dishes in so this bowl would be kept free of that. But if it is your sink, you can use it for anything you want to use it for
You don't have to fill a big bowl if you just need a small one, and disposal.
It can be useful for tipping things away as I always find I've left something with some sort of liquid in after I've filled the sink with water.
it's 4 draining stuff & washing smaller items
one is for cooking use and other is for like when you have to clean dishes by hand
It is called a vegetable bowl; it's for washing veggies.... or for bathing little tiny babies.... lol....
rinsing dishes
It's for rinsing so you don't get your dish water cold.
as far as i am aware it is for rinsing,dishes,clothes,ect.Hop... this helps!
use it in whichever way you want.. i use mine for drainage of cans and bottles ive washed out ready for recycling.... i've even washed my underwear in it! :)
I have always had a double sink: I wash the items in one and put them into the 2nd. When I've finished washing them I rinse them all in one go. Like this you save time and water
I dont have one but Mums isnt connected to a shredder just another drain so we use it for tipping the dregs down so you dont dirty the washing up water so much
