How can I humanely get rid of wasps who have made a nest by my home and discourage them from coming back?

Answers:
no good way to discourage them because it's natural for them to build nests. Only really humane way is to kill them quick.

We get wasp nests all the time under our eaves. Go to a hardware store and pickup wasp and hornet spray. The less expensive kind works just as well at the pricier version (I've done a side by side comparison).
Wear goggles if the eaves are really high up so the spray doesn't get in your eyes, otherwise it's not necessary.
Wait till early morning somewhere between 2:30 am -6:00 am when it's very dark outside to spray. Have a pole/broomstick handle and plastic handy. Aim a steady stream at the nest until no more wasps fall out of th nest usually 3 min depending on the size of the nest. Golf ball sized nests are small in my book.
Wait a few minutes and knock down the nest. The stem is slightly sticky so it takes some force. Wrap it up in a bag and throw away.

Call for an exterminator. Wasps are dangerous. Best you deal with them safely.
put bleech in the hole where they are.
I dont know about you, but wasps have never been very humane to me....

Im allergic to wasps and bees. I can tell you that there is no way to "encourage" them to leave or not return. Your best bet is to kill them off. Do yourself a favor - get some wasp killing spray, and only use it very early in the morning, or late in the evening. Wait until the wasps are all at home and asleep, then let them have it. If you do it any other time of day, the wasps wont be there, so they wont get killed...and when they come back, they will be mad and looking for you!

Good luck!.
Let them know that your're selling the home to an african american and the WASPs normally will pack up and move.
I would go with the exterminator. We once had a bees nest in our cement patio, and it was recommended that we pour bleach into the hole at night, since they all go back to their 'home' at dusk. We did that, and never had a problem after that. I agree that there is no humane way to deal with them.

Sing Gaelic folk songs while strumming a harp. This is known to put wasps at ease. Gently remove their nest and gingerly hurl it as far as you can, preferably into the nearest drive in movie theatre lot because wasps are known to be captivated by second run horror flicks and will never want to leave.
Remove the nest at light when the wasps are lethargic. then make sure you keep them from rebuilidng.
Wasps are dangerous. Hire a professional to get rid of them.
Years ago we had a similar problem on our back concrete stoop, when you walked out the back door you had a swarm around you immediately. I tried all kinds of bombs and sprays, nothing worked. Finally I sat up my 16 gallon shop vacum with the end of the hose right by their entrance hole. They couldn't help themselves, they had to try to get in and out, and when they did they were sucked in. It knocked them silly being sucked in, and then I'd remove the lid and finish them off. It took quite a while but eventually I had them all, the queen got away and I saw her flying out to greener pastures. It doesn't sound very humane but we're talking about wasps here.
