Is there any other type of filter besides the cartridge filter that came with my pool?

It's quite possible to go to a larger pump and filter. It's not something I suggest a homeowner to do, but a Pool tech can do this easily. As someone had pointed out, the suction and return side needs to go to 1 1/2 inch . Getting a through wall fitting to do this is actually easy and they are avaliable. It can be done easily with no leaks, providing you know what you're doing or you get a pool tech in.
It's the thru wall fittings that will be the make or break you'll have to use an inground vinyl pool return fitting and on the suction side the same thing, but with a safety approved suction grate threaded on, the plumbing for the filter and pump will be child's play.
Before you start any of this, check with your local codes, as far as entrapment issues. Municipalities all tend to differ and you may have to add a 'T" inside the pool on the suction side and add another grate. You may not even be allowed to change the design period

yes,you can use a bigger pump.you can use a DE filter or a sand.for a pool your size a DE filter would just be a waste of money.a larger filter whether cartridge or sand would show major improvements.the now have a new sand that is as good as a DE filter.you would have to inquire at your local pool dealer about it or email me and ill send you some info.

you could use alarger pump and you can switch over to a sand filter it wouldnt hurt anything.
Sorry, but because of the way the silly intex filters attach to the pool you won't find a replacement. Intex uses a too small plumbing line that simply will not supply enough water to a "real" pump. You would have to enlarge the hole through the pool wall-- which WILL cause a leak. Plus, a new filter and pump will cost way more than the pool did!
