An air filter will help cut down on the dust, but only the filter type NOT THE IONIC "air purification" like the ionic breeze & knockoffs... they create ozone which will make allergies worse and does absolutely nothing for dust anyway. You might want to have sears or local hvac company come out & inspect your ducts to see if they need cleaning. you may also want to try a different kind of air filter for your heating & air conditioning system like a 3M filtrete filter instead of the old fashioned fiberglass type filters. They are a bit more expensive but you only have to change them out every 3 months instead of every month, so it actually saves you a bit of money. Also pledge wipes & swiffers don't do such a good job at repelling dust like a good old fashioned furnature polish, the multi-surface polishes for glass & wood works well too. use an old tee shirt or cloth diaper sprayed with a furnature polish...(pledge, old english, store brand, whatever) it will repel the dust and keep surfaces looking cleaner for longer. As for allergies, a hepa air filter is your best bet, Austin air makes a really nice one & the filters only need to be changed every 5 years, one unit will purify 1500 ft every 10 minutes! Try to keep your floors bare, carpeting traps dust mites which is a major cause of allergies, also launder your bedding twice a week with bleach(if possible) and invest in a good allergenic mattress cover and pillow covers. Also see your doctor to find out if there is a perscription that can help with your indoor allergies

Try changing the filters in your furnace/air conditioner. The air purifiers are really great, too.
