Make it 2 times as big---you'll have room to grow into it. Mine is too small and now can't afford to expand.

My FIRST suggestion is if this is YOUR FIRST house, definitely DO NOT build it YOURSELF.
Have you skills? Knowledge? Contacts with suppliers/contractors? Have you a size in mind? Have you a location in mind or own land? Have you a budget in mind?
Sooooooooooooo many answers to questions you don't ask specifically. Ive built ONE home I lived in, long ago. I swore I'd never do it again,,, and I have the abilities.
Certainly you can DESIGN your own, and hire the job out, or find a reputable contractor and engage them.
