And by getting a water softener, washing your clothing won't be as damaging, your water-using appliances (like a coffee maker) won't break down as quickly, and you'll actually be able to build a lather when shaving or showering.

You need to buy a water softner system.
You can buy a water softener and add salt crystals to it. But don't overdo it. When taking a shower the water merely slides over your body and doesn't give you a clean feeling.
