Why are the birds doing this?
Answers:
They are more than likely picking off insects. If they have never done this before you might want to inspect the area and make sure there are no termite or ant colonies breeding underneath the siding.
Other answers:
I think they are part of a terrorist plot. The birds are obviously martyrs trying to destroy your home little by little.

have you ever seen the movie "the birds?"
Maybe they have a bunch of freshly hatched and hungry sparrow babies at home yelling and crying at them all day, and they just like to ram their little heads into your wall, thinking what the hell did I get myself into? I thought it was just a little fling...stupid! Stupid! Stupid!
Are there any nests in your gutters? That might be an answer. Another possibility is that they're eating the little flying gnats and that hang around. The bugs are probably sticking close to your siding because it's warm. Have you ever walked out of your house and seen flies on your siding? That's the only explanation I can come up with. As to why they just started, I don't know. Like I said earlier, maybe there are nests in your gutters. Try putting ornamental owls out around your house. Owls are natural predators of smaller birds. You can find the owls at Lowe's or Wal Mart or any place that has a home and garden center. We had a problem with barn swallows last year. We put out the owl, the birds did not come around. Hope this helps.
Perhaps there are some sort of small bugs in this area that they are feeding on. It does seem like a somewhat odd thing. Perhaps you should contact your local ag-extension agent.
