stopping mushrooms from growing in lawn?

a large tree was removed and clumps of mushrooms keep appearing every day, does anybody know how to stop these once and for all?

Answers:
The roots are decaying. Mushrooms are a fungus that will grow in decaying wet wood. The only way to rid yourself is to remove the remaining roots.

Call you local extension office and speak to a master gardener or horticulture agent.

Other answers:
To get rid of mushrooms, you just need to get your lawn to outcompete them. Grass loves a nitrogen rich soil. Mushrooms love a carbon rich soil. Lawn fertilizer has heaps of nitrogen and hardly any carbon. Time to fertilize! Twenty bucks and ten minutes of time will do wonders for your lawn.

Hope this helps.

If the tree roots are truly dead (some roots live despite the tree being removed) then your mushroom is a primary saprophytic decayer. It will surely be limited to the nutrients supplied by the root only. Once this source of lignin or cellulose has been used up in a year or two, they're gone forever.

But since you have them, why not get some books and learn to ID mushrooms. Many are very good to eat as well as easy to identify. The toxic quality of mushrooms is greatly exaggerated in England and N. America due our common heritage. Continental Europeans teach kids from young ages which are good, which aren't, and what to bring home if they ever see them while playing in the forest. Great hobby with many clubs around the country to help or show you around.
