adverse possession law (USA)?

Would like to know about adverse possession, and how it works.
I realize the laws would vary from state to state.
I live in New York state.

I'm not sure what the law states in NY, but in Missouri it's ten years of "open and notorious possesion." It is VERY hard to prove. It basically means you have to possess the land in question and know it's not yours.
