I need central air for my new home. How much? What type?

How much is the average cost for a high efficiency system that is enviro friendly as well? What brand is a good brand or type?

Thanks in advance for your help!

If your replacing a central air conditioner that is over 15 years old, the good news is that your going to save a lot of money on your electric bill with the new A/C. I assume you already have the forced air duct work in place. There are typically two options depending on how high an efficiency (SEER) rating you decide on. You may be able to use your present furnace with the minimum 13 SEER unit and replace just your indoor evaporator coil (mounted in the furnace) and the outdoor condenser unit. But if you want the maximum available 20+ SEER rating, you'll probably have to replace your furnace as well. A 2000 square foot house may require a 3 Ton condenser unit depending on many other factors and the cost for a complete 19 SEER unit with new furnace will be about $6500 or more depending on other work you may have done. I suggest you specify the new R410a refrigerant which is phasing out the older R22 refrigerant. I like the new Lennox systems, and you may want to specify a heat pump (winter and summer operation) instead of just an air conditioner because they cost about the same and you get the heating capability for free!
