Why cucumbers have bitter taste?

My mother plants cucumbers every year and every year they have bitter taste. why is it so.maybe she is doing something wrong?what is the reason. Please answer those who really knows anything from gardening

Answers:
Cucumbers need to be watered 1 gallon a day to keep them from getting bitter. The way you do this is:

1. Get milk jugs and cut out the bottoms

2. Bury the milk jug upside down...half in and half out.

3. Plant the cucumber seedlings next to the milk jugs.

4. Fill the jug full of water every day. The water will slowly seep down into the roots. You have to do this daily. The key is continual watering.

Growing up on the farm, we had a huge garden. My mother had a trick that really worked and I hope it works for you. When she cut the end of the cucumber off, she would rub it on the open end. this took away any bitterness. You do this on both ends. Our cukes always tasted great. Myth or fact, who knows, but it worked.
