Can you identify this toadstool for me?

When I was watering my houseplants this morning I found 2 little toadstools growing in my small orange tree pot. They are about 1 inch tall, larger at the base than the stem and they have a ring around midway up the stem. They are a pale yellow. Anyone know what these guys are. They're really cute. Why did they come up all os a sudden like that. I've had this tree for about 2 years.

Answers:
Break the stem if you see a small amount of a latex fluid, then it is a Pleurotis.
If not it might be a Citrina spp.
The mushroom is the fungus equivalent of a higher plant's flower, it's a reproductive structure.
Many fungi break down dead woody roots.
