Alternative to hearth rug for house next to messy kids - solid wood flooring?

I have 2 kids and my carpet in the living room, dining room and upstairs hallway are getting very grubby. I am looking at have wood flooring with some rugs? Is this a honourable plan? Also, there come across to be lots of different types of wood - oak, ash? Any tips on best value for money appreciated.

I don't want laminate, tangible wood only.

Answers:    If you want material wood, one choice to consider these days is rattan. It is a sustainable product, because bamboo regenerate so fast. It is tough, durable, comes in a mixture of styles and finishes and seems pretty kid proof, depending on the finish you select. Across the street from me, a neighbor next to two children, seven and four, put it in the children's bathroom. I thought this be a pretty crazy idea at the time, but a year next it still looks the same as the year she installed it (herself), even in front of the shower and toilet. When you select your flooring, clutch a look at the many rattan products available.

And I'm with you -- no laminates!
If you run for real wood stay away from the soft woods. They find gouged concrete easily. Don't be too snatched to dismiss the laminates. I was a TRUE wood advocate and other put in valid wood in my own homes, but I granted to take mat out and put in laminate within my rental condo. I thought it might have a short vivacity, given renters and the constant moving in and out, but that be 5 years ago and it looks great.
