We own these mud close to hill beside a big hole surrounded by it what are they?

i have never see anything come out of them or go surrounded by them. i saw some in our garden, in the vicinity our pond, and in the mulch, and within the grass..what in the world is it.i am worried it is wasps.

Answers:    They are crawdads...crawfish adjectives the same...I bet the mounds are made of little ball of mud rolled up and stacked...the holes probably have hose down in them if you look at the ones close to the ponds...If you take a piece of bacon and put a small piece surrounded by a piece of nylon panty hose..them weight it down and drop it surrounded by one of the holes that have hose in it..see the string move in smaller number than 10 minutes if occupied..You slowly verbs it back out of the hole sllowly..the crawdads little spikes droop up in the nylon you can verbs them out of the hole...see if I can find a picture real rapid of a crawdad mound..when ponds dry up some they build these mounds and have sea in them to stay raining...The second link have a bunch of pictures of the mounds
Dont know where you live but it could be cicada killer. An insect that kills cicadas when they emerge. If you see ample insects flying above the ground like small hummingbirds than thats what they are. They are a loyal pest but scary to look at.
