What bugs formulate abnormal holes surrounded by the ground?

I have a flower garden in my front courtyard. It sits along the front of the house where there is an overhang of the front of the house. Ive' be noticing weird holes contained by the dirt under the overhang. I guess you could describe them as small sink holes about 1"-2" surrounded by diameter. Maybe .5" deep. Does anyone know what these are caused by?
