What sorts of plants/flowers can remain surrounded by pots for years?
Answers: These three are extremely trouble-free to care for and will last for years surrounded by a pot:
Spathiphyllum (peace lily)

Sansevieria
(mother-in-law tongue, snake plant) http://www.plantoftheweek.org/week192.sh...
Philodendron http://www.evergrowing.com/tips/philoden...
Pothos (AKA: philodendron, devil's ivy) is a beautiful vine with variegated, heart-shaped leaves. I hold a pothos that has been potted for more than ten years. It with the sole purpose needs to be watered (soaked) once a week, fertilized lightly (once every three months) and re-potted/divided as obligatory (years). In sunny spots it will grow vigorously, but it grows great in low desk light. Mine's been hanging (from a macrame' sling, for heaven's sake), but they grow great up a topiary pole, too.
