Why place an apple surrounded by the case next to the potatoes?

i know that by placing apple with a potato will prevent the potato from budding. why is it so? what website can i get information from?

Answers:    The apple will occupy the moisture that causes the potato to sprout.
Ithink it may only be an weak wives' tale.

The oils lock in the requisite nutrients from the air, and thus the potatoe can't sprout.

I haven't seen anything roughly apples or budding though.
I heard of that before when I asked how I could hold my potatoes longer because they kept budding very quickly. Someone told me in the order of the apple, i never tried it but a few people said it works!
